The gasometers are for gas storage. The 'can' in the middle rises up inside the frame as it fills with gas.

Are they hard or soft? I'd imagine they're like big balloons? Odd looking things either way.

They're a bit like the skin of a drum - you can feel that they're hollow underneath and they vibrate slightly while walking on them, but they're solid enough not to worry about going through them. Not particularly bouncy either!
